The sled push is where many HYROX races are won or lost. It is heavy, it comes early, and if your feet slip you burn energy for nothing. Here is how to fix it.

Why your feet slip

There are two kinds of slip on the sled.

The shoe slips on the turf. This is mostly technique and shoe choice.

The foot slips inside the shoe. You drive forward, the shoe grips, but your foot slides forward inside it. This one is easy to miss, and it gets worse as your socks get wet.

Technique fixes

  • Get low. Arms locked or bent, body at a strong forward angle, so your force goes forward instead of down.
  • Short, fast steps. Long strides lift your weight off the turf and reduce grip.
  • Drive through the forefoot. Stay on the balls of your feet.
  • Keep moving. Restarting a stopped sled costs far more than keeping it rolling.

Kit fixes

Shoes

A firm, stable trainer with a grippy outsole. Very soft, tall-stack running shoes compress under load and feel unstable. (More in our first HYROX guide.)

Lacing

Use the extra top eyelet for a heel lock. It stops the heel lifting when you drive.

Socks

This is the one most people overlook. A grip sock with silicone across the sole holds against the insole, so your foot stays where the shoe is. An arch and ankle band keeps the sock from twisting. By the sled pull and lunges your socks are soaked, which is exactly when a normal sock starts to move.

Train it

  • Practise sled pushes at race weight, not just lighter loads.
  • Do some sessions in the exact shoes and socks you will race in.
  • Train in the heat where you can. Race day in Singapore will be humid.
