The first time you pull on a pair of compression or taping-style socks, it can feel like a mistake. They are tight, hard to get over the heel and nothing like a normal sock. That is normal. The fit is the point.

Why they feel so tight

A regular sock is designed to cover your foot. A compression sock is designed to hold it. The knit is firmer through the arch and ankle so the sock does not stretch out and slide during a run or a game. A firm band will always feel strange compared with a loose cotton sock.

Most people stop noticing it after the first few wears.

The easy way to put them on

Do not grab the top and pull. That fights the tightest part of the sock.

  1. Turn the sock inside out down to the heel. Put your hand inside, pinch the heel and pull the leg part back over it.
  2. Slide your foot in as far as the heel.
  3. Line the heel up with your heel.
  4. Roll the sock up your leg a little at a time, rather than pulling from the top.
  5. Smooth out wrinkles under the foot and across the arch.

Dry skin helps. If you have just showered or put on lotion, give it a few minutes.

How to tell if the size is wrong

A good fit feels firm and even, with no pinching.

  • Too small: the band digs in, you see deep marks after taking them off, or your toes feel squashed.
  • Too big: the heel sits above your actual heel, or the sock wrinkles under the foot.

If anything feels numb, tingly or painful, take them off and try the next size up. If you have a circulation condition, check with a doctor before wearing compression. Our size guide has the measurements.

Taking them off

Roll them down from the top rather than pulling at the toe, which stretches the fabric.

A note on latex

Many compression socks, including ours, contain natural rubber latex for stretch. If you have a latex allergy, check the label before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for compression socks to be hard to put on?

Yes. Use the inside-out method above and it gets much easier.

Should compression socks leave marks?

A faint pattern from the knit is normal. Deep, painful marks usually mean the size is too small.

Will they loosen up over time?

Slightly, but good ones hold their shape. Washing cold and air drying helps them last.

How long can I wear them?

For training and games, wear them for the session. If you are unsure about wearing compression for longer periods, ask a doctor.
