The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon runs on 5–6 December 2026. The flag-off is early for a reason — even at 4am the air sits near 28°C with humidity in the 80s and barely moves. Kit that is fine in Europe in December behaves differently here. Here is what to wear, from the feet up.
Shoes
Fit slightly roomier than your daily pair. Feet swell in heat and over distance. A thumbnail of space at the front is the usual rule, and it matters more here than in a cool climate.
Race in shoes you have already run long in. Race week is not the time for a first outing in a new pair. Whatever you wear should have at least one long run on it.
Expect them to get wet. Not from rain — from you. Drenched uppers change how the foot sits, which is where most late-race foot trouble starts.
Socks
This is the part people leave to the last minute and then think about for the whole second half.
- Synthetic, not cotton. Cotton holds sweat, goes heavy and stays wet for hours in this climate.
- Fit close. A sock that moves is a sock that rubs. Bunching under the arch at 30km is a long way from the finish.
- Grip on the sole reduces the slide between sock and insole when everything is soaked, which is the exact condition you will be running in.
- Bring the pair you trained in. Race expo socks on race morning is how people learn what a hot spot is.
More on the mechanics in why your feet slide in running shoes.
Clothing
Light colours, loose cut, synthetic. You are running in the dark, so the sun is not the issue — the humidity is. Anything that traps moisture against you stays wet all race.
Cover the chafe points before the start, not after you feel them. Underarms, inner thighs, anywhere a seam sits.
Cap or visor: useful if you are still out after sunrise. For the early waves it is mostly a sweat-management choice. A headband or cap keeps sweat out of your eyes, which sounds trivial until it isn't.
Small things that change the race
- Nothing new on race day. Not socks, not gels, not a shirt from the expo.
- Practise drinking on the move in the heat. Your fuelling plan from a cool climate will not transfer.
- Lace check at the start line. Snug at the top, not crushing the midfoot. See the lacing fixes in feet sliding forward.
- Have a dry set in your bag drop. Standing around soaked after the finish gets cold quickly in an air-conditioned hall.
A simple test week
Ten days before the race, do a long run at race time of day in the exact kit you plan to wear. Same socks, same shoes, same shirt, same fuelling. Anything that annoys you at 20km will be worse at 35km, and you still have time to change it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What shoes should I wear for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon?
The ones you have already run long in, fitted with a little extra room for swelling. Racing shoes you have not trained in are a gamble in this heat, and a race-week purchase gives you no time to find out where it rubs.
Are compression socks a good idea for a humid marathon?
Some runners like the held feeling over long distances; others find them warm here. Test in training rather than on race day.
Do I need grip socks for a road marathon?
They are not required. What they change is how much your foot moves inside a soaked shoe, which is when most people notice problems. More on that here.
What about rain?
December is monsoon season. A soaked shoe is heavier and softer, so a sock that holds its position matters more, not less.
