Walk into a powerlifting gym on deadlift day and you will see a lot of knee-high socks. They are not a fashion statement.

Why long socks for deadlifts

Shin protection. In a good deadlift the bar travels close to your legs. It often scrapes the shins on the way up. A long sock is a simple barrier between the knurling and your skin.

Hygiene. Shared bars on shared platforms. A sock keeps your skin, and anything on it, off the bar.

Competition rules. Many powerlifting federations require shin-covering socks for the deadlift. If you compete, check your federation's rulebook for the exact requirement.

What goes on your feet

The shin sock is one question. What touches the floor is another.

Flat, firm shoes — the most common choice. A thin, firm sole keeps you close to the floor and stable.

Deadlift slippers — very thin flat shoes made for pulling.

Socks only — where the gym allows it, pulling in socks gives the lowest, flattest base. Plain socks slide on smooth platforms; socks with grip on the sole hold better.

Avoid soft running shoes for heavy pulls. Compressible foam under your feet means a less stable base.

Two different socks

It helps to think of these as two separate jobs:

  • Shins: a long sock for bar contact.
  • Feet: grip and a snug fit, so your foot stays put inside the shoe or on the platform.

Some lifters wear a long sock for the shins and handle grip with their shoes. If you pull in socks only, grip under the foot matters more. For gym and HYROX work more broadly, see grip socks for the gym.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people wear knee-high socks to deadlift?

To protect the shins from the bar scraping up the legs, and for hygiene on shared bars.

Are deadlift socks required?

In many powerlifting competitions, yes. In a normal gym, they are optional.

Should I deadlift barefoot or in shoes?

A flat, firm base is the goal. Flat shoes, deadlift slippers or socks with grip all work. Soft running shoes are the least stable choice.

Can I deadlift in socks at the gym?

Only if your gym allows it. Many require closed shoes on the gym floor.
